Tim Badman is Director of the World Heritage Programme at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). IUCN’s World Heritage Programme implements initiatives to enhance the role of the World Heritage Convention in protecting the planet’s biodiversity and promote effective use of its mechanisms to strengthen the conservation and management of natural World Heritage sites. The World Heritage Programme is managed from IUCN’s international headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, and works in close collaboration with World Heritage regional focal points in each of IUCN’s regional offices, as well as with IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and Global Protected Areas Programme (GPAP). Recent joint research between IUCN and ICOMOS has aimed to create new methods of recognition and support for the interconnected character of the natural, cultural and social value of highly significant land and seascapes and affiliated biocultural practices.
